Double Hammock Underquilt – What to Buy & Why?

Do you get cold sleeping in your hammock? This double hammock underquilt delivers ultimate protection from cold, wind and moisture, while retaining heat inside. =)

Double Hammock Underquilt - How to Stay Warmer While Camping

Why Use an Underquilt?

Most camping hammocks are made from a thin, parachute-like material to keep them lightweight and portable. Therefore, they offer no warmth whatsoever, especially from below.

Compressible underquilts, on the other hand, offer a significant amount of insulation. Plus, the large double-wide size weighs less than 3 or 4 lbs and can compact into a really small stuff sack.

You can even get this “shield cradle” warm enough for winter camping seasons. In other words, it has a temperature rating of 23 degrees celsius. Combine that with a cold weather sleeping bag, and you can plan on getting a comfortable night’s sleep.

Hammock Underquilt Temperature Ratings for Winter and 3 Season

Now, if you want to save some money and don’t camp in extremely cold temperatures, get the 3-season underquilt. You get less insulation, but the smaller quilt saves you about 1 pound in weight (ideal for ultralight camping).

Double Underquilt VS Single Underquilt:

Single VS Double Underquilt for an Outdoor Hammock

First of all, you won’t find much of a price difference between these two versions. In other words, the single size doesn’t save you much money over the double wide.

Second, the single hammock quilt measures 4 feet wide, whereas the double measure 5 feet 6 inches wide. They each measure about 8 feet long (full length).

Third, you can save yourself about 1 pound in weight with the smaller size. Therefore, if a lighter carrying weight (or less bulk) is important to you, go for the smaller version.

On the other hand, if you have a double hammock, like to spread out more or have the sides of the quilt come up higher, you will probably like the double size underquilt more. (The larger version also works best for asymmetrical hammocks.)

Do I Need an Underquilt for My Hammock?

Klymit Hammock Sleeping Pad in Camping Hammock

In my experience from sleeping outdoors in a hammock, it is easy to get chilled from below in cold weather. Therefore, if you don’t already have a hammock sleeping pad or a Hennessy Radiant Double Bubble Pad, I’d suggest getting an underquilt.

Underquilt VS Pad Comparison: Both options provide additional warmth. However the quilt surrounds your hammock from the outside and therefore offers better wind and moisture protection

Hammock Underquilt VS Sleeping Bag This double-size quilt does not come with a zipper and therefore is not designed to be used instead of a sleeping bag. Although this Underquilt/Sleeping Bag does zip.

Double underquilts work more for “layering” and give you an affordable way to ensure a more comfortable night’s sleep. You can always unzip your sleeping bag if you get too warm, right?

Inflatable Sleeping Pad for Hammocks – What’s Best?

Inflatable Sleeping Pad for HammocksAre you looking for a way to keep your camping hammock warmer at night? I found an inflatable sleeping pad for hammocks that does a great job at insulating your bed.

Why Should You Buy a Hammock Sleeping Pad?

These blow-up pads are really easy to use, and they don’t take up much space in your backpack. Nonetheless, they can make a world of difference when it comes to a good nights sleep.

You do have a few choices in hammock sleeping pads, though. Or, you can get an insulating underquilt that wraps around the outside of your hammock.

Inflatable Pad VS Underquilt:

Hammock Underquilt for Double HammockCompared to an underquilt, these ultralight sleeping pads only weigh about half as much. Plus, since you can deflate them, they travel much more compactly.

In fact, you can compress the Hybern8 inflatable sleeping pad down to the size of a 1-liter plastic water bottle. Talk about space-saving!

Hammock Inflatable Pad Comparison: Hybern8 VS Klymit:

Klymit Hammock Sleeping Pad in Camping HammockKlymit makes another inflatable mat for hammocks with a similar design. However, it weighs about 1.6 lbs (vs 1.3 of the Hybern8).

Plus the Klymit is constructed of 20D polyester vs the thicker 75D polyester fabric of the Hybern8. Furthermore, the Klymit has a lower insulation R-value (1.6 vs 2.2 of the Hybern8).

All that said, the Klymit features a 180-degree wrap around design. In other words, the pad has “wings” that come up on the sides to provide an additional insulation barrier from more directions.

ECOTEK Hybern8 Sleeping Pad for HammocksHowever, these wings don’t work so well if you want to insert the pad inside your sleeping bag.

Some people prefer to do this when the temperature is colder. In this case, the ECOTEK Hybern8 would work better.

In either case, both labels have a flexible, supportive design that you can use in either a hammock or a tent. Plus, they both inflate and deflate quickly, which makes them really convenient to use.

Insulated VS Non-Insulated Sleeping Pad:

Both brands also carry their own “insulated” versions. These warmer options weigh slightly more, don’t compress as small and, of course, have a higher R-value.

Hybern8 Inflatable Hammock Sleeping Pad for 4-Season Camping

Not sure which hammock pad you should get? The insulated versions are designed for year-round camping with a temperature rating down to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

On the other hand, the non-insulated pads work better for 3-season camping or down to 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

How do Inflatable Sleeping Pads Insulate Hammocks?

ECOTEK uses a patent-pending FlexCell “Honeycomb” construction that traps air to reduce heat loss. Simultaneously, these air pockets provide support for pressure points while you sleep.

Specs for Hybern8 Inflatable Sleeping Pad for Hammocks:

Hammock Underquilt Review & Comparison – What’s Best?

Are you getting cold when you sleep in your hammock at night? There’s a simple solution, and it’s called a hammock underquilt.

Hammock Underquilt - How to Stay Warm in Your Hammock

These simple hammock accessories are genius: they can add a significant amount of warmth without costing a lot of money. That said, if you are camping in a colder climate and want additional warmth, I’d suggest opting for the down-filled underquilt rated for 20 degrees F.

1. OneTigris Budget-Priced Hammock Underquilt

First, let’s take a look at the cheaper $65-$70 synthetic version.

Hammock Underquilt Features

This “under blanket” has a polyester filling with a temperature rating of 40°F to 68°F (5°C to 20°C). Consequently, this affordable version is labeled as a 3-season underquilt.

Therefore, don’t expect to use it year-round (unless you live in a warmer climate). That said, it can easily extend your summer camping season while keeping your warmer on cool nights.

Hammock Blanket CordsIn addition to adding an extra layer of insulation to your hammock, this full-length underquilt also shields the wind. It wraps snugly around all standard-sized hammocks (Like the Eno), so you don’t have to order a special size (unless you want a double wide).

Simply attach the short bungee cords to your hammock strap carabiner to secure the underquilt. To detach, just unhook.

Note: This 10-second setup/take down process is so easy that you might as well take advantage of “layering” and wear it during the day, right? Well, you can, and people do. As long as you are going to add an extra 1.87 lbs to your backpack, why not make the most of it! =)

Many outdoor enthusiasts like the lightweight OneTigris because it has a simple design, compact small and doesn’t cost a lot of money. Not to mention, you get that extra warmth without having to sleep on the ground.

How Does a Hammock Underquilt Work?

These brilliantly-designed “hammock koozies” don’t squish down against the hammock because they surround the outside. Therefore, they insulate more effectively due to the thicker air-filled layer.

The following video explains why an underquilt works better to insulate you than a sleeping bag. Woogles Outdoors also explains how to attach, cinch and set up the underquilt.

Next, let’s check out the warmer, but more expensive, 20°F Down Underquilt.

2. Outdoor Vitals Down Hammock Underquilt:

Many people prefer the cheaper price of the OneTigris above. However, as mentioned in the video above, if you hammock camp frequently in colder temperatures, a down underquilt is worth the investment.

Down Hammock Underquilt - Warm Insulation for Camping

The loftier fill adds more warmth, yet it compacts just as small due to its excellent compression abilities. Both options provide ultralight versions ideal for backpacking trips.

In addition to insulating as an underquilt, you can also use this as a regular sleeping bag or as a technical blanket. With a drawstring at both ends, you can custom-fit this quilt into a snug, form-fitting cocoon. This keeps even more warmth from escaping.

By the way, REI has tips on how to care for the DWR-coated fabric on these underquilts. (The same protective material found on Gore-Tex products). They also include information on manufacturer ratings and how the waterproofing layer works.

Underquilt VS a Sleeping Pad Comparison:

Klymit Hammock Sleeping Pad in Camping HammockShould you buy a sleeping pad instead? Both products have similar features, in that they provide insulation and comfort to the sleeper. They have similar pricing and they weigh about the same. However, they do have key differences.

For instance, the sleeping pad goes on the inside of the hammock rather than the outside. Rather than being composed of insulating fill, you inflate it with air, manually.

The pad does have some advantages, though. You can use it for padding if you decide to tent camp on the ground. In addition, it can enhance the comfort of a hammock with cushioning – even on a warm day.
